Resources
Below is a list of various resources that helped me tremendously in my journey toward living a life of travel, joy, and experimentation. The resources range from sites to help you travel cheaper to personal development books. The list is by no means exhaustive, especially the books! It is, however, a great starting point if you find yourself relating to the posts on this website.
Travel
Podcasts
Zero to Travel
Zero to Travel is a legendary podcast by Jason Moore that keeps on going! Look for weekly interviews related to location independence, travel destinations, and building a life around travel.
The Maverick Show
TMS is all about entrepreneurship, travel tips and strategies, and lifestyle freedom. Matt Bowles is thoughtful in the types of questions he asks his guests and his show is incredibly engaging.
Extra Pack of Peanuts
This is the show that got it all started for me. EPOP opened up a new world by showing me that long-term travel was an option without needing to be rich.
Books
“Ten Years a Nomad: A Traveler’s Journey Home”
Nomadic Matt, the OG! I loved this book because it illustrates the transformation of someone living an ordinary life to eventually becoming nomadic and learning so much about themself along the way.
“Travel as Transformation: Conquer The Limits Of Culture To Discover Your Own Identity”
Gregory Diehl does an amazing job at describing the internal benefits of travel and what happens to our identity when we choose to explore the world. The book is also really helpful if you’re finding yourself fearful about solo-travel.
“Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel”
The travel book of all travel books! Speak to anyone who’s taken any extended period of time to travel and I guarantee you they will say this book played a huge role in helping them take the leap. This is the book to read if you’re thinking about taking time off from your “normal” life.
Websites
Google Flights
It doesn’t get any more useful (and simple) than Google Flights. If you’re flexible, you can search for flights all over the world using the “everywhere” option to see where in the world is cheapest. What you find may surprise you!
Airbnb
Cheaper accommodations can definitely be found in hostels, but if you plan to stay in a place for a few weeks or longer and would like some privacy, Airbnb is where it’s at. Don’t forget to negotiate prices with hosts!
Couchsurfing
Nothing but good things to say about Couchsurfing. You can show up in a city, stay at someone’s place (not always a couch) for free or find other traveler’s passing through town. All of this for the price of $15-$30 a year!
Life Experimentation and Mindset
Books
“The Pathless Path: Imagining a New Story for Work and Life”
The Pathless Path is the most influential book I’ve ever read. Simple as that. This book showed me that it’s okay to not know what the future holds, and that there’s actually lots of value in being uncertain about what’s next in life.
“The Art of Non-Conformity: Set Your Own Rules, Live the Life You Want, and Change the World”
Chris Guillebeau does a masterful job at engaging and motivating readers to pursue the life they truly want to live instead of the conventional one that’s laid out for them.
“The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing”
Bronnie Ware shares the many lessons she learned in her work with dying patients, all of which are ultimately meant to encourage readers to live a life they’ll be fulfilled with when their day comes.
Podcasts
Deep Dive with Ali Abdaal
Productivity, entrepreneurship, creativity, and much more. Ali covers a wide range of topics to help listeners lead happier and healthier lives.
Deviate with Rolf Potts
Much of what Rolf talks about relates to travel, but the podcast is so much more than that. Listen for interesting conversations to help you live life experimentally.
The Pathless Path with Paul Millerd
Much like the book, the main themes of this podcast are unconventional living, life design, and new and interesting ideas around the role of work in people’s lives.
