Amid the bustling city that is Buenos Aires sits the uniquely charming and vibrant neighborhood of Villa Crespo.
Despite being overlooked by many travelers, the lovely Villa Crespo holds a special place in my heart and is my personal favorite neighborhood in all of Buenos Aires.
While the selfish traveler in me would like to prevent Villa Crespo from turning into a tourist hotspot, there is so much the neighborhood has to offer visitors. It would be completely unfair of me to not share all the beauty I have discovered in one of Buenos Aires’ most well-kept secrets.
In this blog post, I will showcase the unique allure of Villa Crespo and share the top 6 reasons why the neighborhood deserves to make it on your Buenos Aires itinerary, as well as the top 5 things to do while you’re there. From the inviting Mercat Villa Crespo and captivating street art to the lively community spirit and diverse culinary scene, Villa Crespo promises an unforgettable adventure.
Where is Villa Crespo?
Villa Crespo (also known as Comuna 15) borders Caballito to the south and the popular Palermo Soho to the east. It is located in the northwest area of the city of Buenos Aires.
To some, the neighborhood seems far away from the main attractions of Buenos Aires. It is true that it is not as close to many of Buenos Aires’ attractions or well-known sites like Recoleta Cemetery and Teatro Colon.
However, considering how expansive and safe the public transportation system is in Buenos Aires, visiting Villa Crespo is generally no longer than a 25-30 bus or Subte (train) ride. Additionally, part of the neighborhood’s charm lies in the fact that it’s located slightly outside of the main zones of Buenos Aires.
For anyone looking for a culturally immersive, safe, lively and entertaining visit to Buenos Aires, I highly recommend staying in Villa Crespo.
Top 6 Reasons You Should Visit Villa Crespo
- Cultural Fusion
- In many ways, Villa Crespo embodies the fusion of cultures that defines the city of Buenos Aires. As you meander through the cobble-stoned streets adorned with towered trees on each side, you’ll quickly notice how people of all backgrounds and ethnicities comprise this neighborhood. Villa Crespo bleeds multiculturalism and diversity, which is reflected in the vast array of culinary options which serve everything from traditional Jewish food to classic Argentine cuisine to tasty Venezuelan food. Additionally, you’ll hear languages other than Spanish spoken much more in Villa Crespo than in other neighborhoods, a testament to its melting pot of culture.
- Delightful Culinary Scene
- Food enthusiasts will undoubtedly be in their happy place in Villa Crespo as the rich culinary traditions of the neighborhood come alive on every street. From the countless traditional Argentine confiterias (pastry shops) and panaderias (bakeries) on Avenida Corrientes to the countless shops and restaurants serving Kosher food, visitors are sure to have not only a wide range of options, but an incredible culinary adventure that cannot be matched in other neighborhoods throughout Buenos Aires. Go to a café for the classic Argentine breakfast of medialunas (croissants) and coffee. As lunch approaches, make your way to Mercat Villa Crespo and choose from over 30 different dining options. For dinner, head to one of many Villa Crespo’s parrilas for a hearty grilled steak, accompanied by a delicously fruit-forward, barrel-soaked glass of Malbec. - Artistic Paradise
- Just as food enthusiasts will easily find much to love about Villa Crespo, artists will not have trouble feeling as if they have been transported to nirvana. One of my favorite things about the neighborhood is how central and important art is to the community. Visitors can spend hours meandering through the streets and gazing at the vibrant street art that adorns Villa Crespo. From radiant murals and intricate portraits and landscapes, the artists who have blessed Villa Crespo’s walls and storefronts aim to tell stories related to politics, Argentina’s economy, and other issues facing local residents and national citizens alike.
- Shopping Galore
- While I am not one to shop unless I absolute need to, my more fashion-forward travel friends will find in Villa Crespo a blissful shopping delight. Lined on both sides of the streets are a unique mix of boutique shops, stores of well-known brands like Lacoste and Calvin Klein, and large outlets, making it easy to find whatever you are looking for. Look to find the latest trends in local fashion, the highest quality leather, and some of the best thrift shops in all of Buenos Aires in Villa Crespo. Given the incredibly creative community of residents in Villa Crespo, shoppers will also find an abundance of handcrafted goods and accessories which are sure to leave a lasting memory of the lovely neighborhood.
- Zestful Nightlife
- I love Villa Crespo’s nightlife scene for its dynamic and diverse character. There is undeniably a captivating ambiance and pulsating energy as the sun comes down in Buenos Aires’ best neighborhood. Local and visitors come together to dance the night away in Villa Crespo’s milongas (tango venues) and share stories and laughs at one of the countless options for nightlife. For night owls who fancy live music, head to a jazz venue like Swing City (more on this below!). For those looking for laid-back breweries, Byra Villa Crespo is a great option. In search up a more chic, upscale cocktail bar? eL Limón is exactly that. Wherever visitors elect to go, amid Villa Crespo’s nightlife they will embark on unforgettable adventures and create lasting memories.
- Vibrant Community Spirit
- Bursting at the seams of Villa Crespo is a lively community spirit that welcomes and embraces all who are fortunate enough to venture to the neighborhood. Share stories with residents and witness first-hand the passion of the Argentines and neighborhood pride of Villa Crespo locals. Community events and “ferias” (street fairs) are a constant in the wonderful Comuna 15. Attend one and engage in conversations to experience the warmth and hospitality of residents. Don’t just take me word for it: immersing yourself in the neighborhood and its people, you’ll quickly understand why Villa Crespo has the reputation of being charming, lively, and spirited.
Top 5 Things to Do in Villa Crespo
Villa Crespo is not as big nor as populous as Recoleta and the various sub-neighborhoods that make up Palermo. But it is one of Buenos Aires’ largest neighborhoods, making it no surprise that there is so much to do in the neighborhood.
While the list below is by no means exhaustive, I have included the top things you should consider doing on your next visit to Villa Crespo.
- Indulge at Mercat Villa Crespo
- No visit to the best neighborhood in Buenos Aires would be complete without indulging in the culinary haven that is Mercat Villa Crespo. There’s more than food at Mercat Villa Crespo: check their Instagram for events ranging from pop-up shops to fire shows. On one of my visits to the market, I was lucky enough to catch one of the last tickets for a wine festival of over 70 wineries throughout Argentina. For 5.000 ARS, myself and other festival-goers could meander through the three floors of Mercat Villa Crespo, trying unlimited wines! Even on the most ordinary days, though, Villa Crespo’s top attraction is a true paradise of gastronomy, one that will leave you counting the days until you return.

- Explore the arts at Ruth Benzacar’s gallery
- One of my favorite things to do in Villa Crespo is to wander and get lost in the neighborhood’s lovely streets. It was doing exactly this one day when I stumbled upon the chic and inventive art gallery of Ruth Benzacar. This artistic and expressive space showcases a diverse range of contemporary work by local artists who are already established as well as those who are emerging in Buenos Aires’ arts scene. The exhibitions will challenge visitors to think beyond ordinary conceptions of art by engaging all senses and providing opportunities to interact with pieces in unique and innovative ways. While it’s not as well-known as other artistic spaces in Buenos Aires, such as the MALBA or Museo de Bellas Artes, Ruth Benzacar’s gallery offers visitors a window into the dynamic art landscape of the city known as “the Paris of South America”.
